Amazing Autumn

New Zealand Photo Tour 2020

Join Glenn Mckimmin on this New Zealand Autumn Photo Tour 2020 to the South Island to capture the amazing colours of Autumn.

Tour Overview

What do The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and Avatar all have in common? They all showcase the immensely photogenic natural landscape of New Zealand. Due to its isolation, New Zealand offers some of the best landscape photography locations in the world including active volcanoes, giant glaciers, wind-sculpted waterfalls and a 90-mile beach. Its snow-capped mountains rival the Swiss Alps and its impressive fjords challenge those of Norway.

Before it was a hotspot for big screen blockbusters, the first Maoris to land on shore called it ‘Aotearoa’, meaning ‘the long white cloud’. Today, this country is one of the most generous locations for a landscape photography tour. Changeable weather constantly creates original scenery for your shoot, with the ease of travelling between the east and west coast in just a few hours.

We’ve scoured the volcanic South Island to bring you a photographic adventure that will visit the best landscape photography locations in New Zealand.

Tour Overview

Day 1 – Lake Tekapo

The Drive to Lake Tekapo will need to be a very quick one we will aim to get there for Sunset but it will be touch and go. There may be the opportunity to do some astro photography if we miss the sunset. Lake Tekapo is home to the Church of the Good Shepard. The image below is exactly what you will be capturing.

Day 2 – Lake Tekapo to Wanaka

We will wake today to do a sunrise on the lake then back for a quick breakfast before heading off to Wanaka. On the way to Wanaka there will be many opportunities to stop and photograph some incredible locations. We will head into Mount Cook for a quick look and pass through Lindis Pass where I will have a very special location organised for you to photograph. When we arrive at Wanaka we’ll check in to the Edgewater Resort.

Day 3 – Lake Wanaka to Te Anau

On day 3 we’ll start with a sunrise shoot before heading for breakfast. After breakfast we’ll hit the road and head off on the long drive to Te Anau. Again we will be stopping along the way before reaching our next hotel, Distinction Luxmore. Te Anau is a wonderful little town and is the entrance to Fiordland.

Day 4 – Te Anau – Milford Sound

Day 4 is up for grabs at this point in time. Whether we will shoot a sunrise in Te Anau or hit the road early and head to Milford Sound for sunrise will all depend on the weather. Milford Sound is renowned for its relentless rain and moody skies. We’ll make the decision on this one over dinner in Te Anau. Either way, we’ll end up in Milford Sound some time that day and we’ll be checking into the Milford Lodge for the night. The drive to Milford is spectacular to say the least, it has some of the most pristine rainforests and we will be stopping at some very secret locations to capture something really different. The image below is one of those locations.

Day 5 – Milford Sound – Queenstown

On Day 5 we’ll be starting off with a sunrise shoot at Milford Sound. Its an amazing place with huge mountains rising straight up out of the waters edge. Once we check out of the hotel we’ll begin the drive back to Queenstown. There is so much to shoot on the way back but we’ll try to shoot only the best stuff. The day will finish off with a sunset in Queenstown before dinner.

Day 6 – Queenstown

Another sunrise probably at Coronet Peak before breakfast in Arrowtown and some free time in Queenstown before heading to the airport.
